Women in California Higher Education


  • 1921

    First Woman to Lead a Community College

    Grace Van Dyke Bird is named Dean of Bakersfield College, becoming the first female executive of a California Community College.

  • 1948

    First Woman to Lead a Single-College District (Interim)

    San Joaquin Delta Community College District appoints a woman to lead the single-college district in an interim role.

  • 1959

    First Woman Superintendent/President

    Dr. Catherine Robbins is named Superintendent/President of Pasadena City College.

  • 1969

    First Woman to Lead a Single-College District

    Marie Mills is selected to lead the Mt. San Antonio College District. She becomes the first woman to lead a single-college district in the California Community College system on a permanent basis.

  • 1978

    First Woman to Lead Multi-College District (Interim)

  • 1984

    First Woman to Lead Multi-College District

    Yuba Community College District appoints the first female chancellor of a multi-college district in the CCC system on a permanent basis.

  • 2020

    CCC Women's Caucus Launches

    The CCC Women's Caucus launches in Fall 2020.
